What to Wear in New Zealand
Here is a basic what to wear guide to help you prepare for your New Zealand vacation. With some of the harshest UV rays in the world, temperamental alpine conditions, changeable seasons and variable temperatures throughout the country, New Zealand is a land of extremes. Knowing what to wear during your visit will help make your New Zealand holiday even more enjoyable.
New Zealand is a land of extremes so you should bring clothing to cover all seasons and weather conditions, no matter what time of the year you are visiting!
Restaurants and hotels generally accept tidy, casual clothing. Nightclubs accept tidy dress and will often have a dress code excluding hooded tops, caps, scruffy shoes/jandals or ripped clothing. Swimmers at beaches, pools and lakes should always wear bathing suits. When adventuring into the outdoors, no matter how long you are going for, always take a change of spare, dry, warm clothes.
We suggest bringing the following items of clothing to make the most of your New Zealand vacation:
For hot weather (November - March):
- Swimming gear
- Sun hat
- Light cotton clothing
- Short pants and skirts
- A good sunscreen (SPF 15+)
For cold weather (April - October):
- Warm woollen clothing
- Rain jacket
- Warm gloves, hats and scarves
- Long pants
- Thermal undergarments
- Sturdy walking shoes
- Sandals or flip-flops
- Tidy dress shoes
