About Whanganui & Manawatu

Whanganui is the west-coast gateway to some of the North Island’s most untamed and majestic scenery. The Matemateaonga and Mangapurua tracks, in the Whanganui National Park, offer some of New Zealand’s best hiking without the crowds encountered in the larger national parks.

New Zealand’s longest navigable waterway, the Whanganui River was once known as the “Rhine of Maoriland”. In the river’s heyday tens of thousands of tourists were transported throughout the region in Mississippi-style paddle steamers and the waterway was a busy arterial into the North Island’s interior.
