About Whanganui & Manawatu

Once a bustling arterial route into the central North Island, the Whanganui River is steeped in tradition. Take a trip back in time on New Zealand's last paddle steamer,  “Waimarie”. Or really explore the river on a kayaking expedition - the journey classed as a New Zealand "Great Journey".

The Mighty Whanganui River

New Zealand’s longest navigable waterway, the Whanganui River was once known as the “Rhine of Maoriland”.

In the river’s heyday tens of thousands of tourists were transported throughout the region in Mississippi-style paddle steamers and the waterway was a busy arterial into the North Island’s interior.

The river is still a focal point today, especially popular with canoeists and kayakers.  One of New Zealand’s most beautiful rivers, the high banks and towering ferns create an aura of mystery and adventure.

Whanganui & Whanganui National Park

Whanganui is the west-coast gateway to some of the North Island’s most untamed and majestic scenery.

The Matemateaonga and Mangapurua tracks, in the Whanganui National Park, offer some of New Zealand’s best hiking without the crowds encountered in the larger national parks.

Palmerston North

Palmerston North is a rural student town, home to the second largest university in the country, Massey. The National Rugby Museum is also located here, for those interested in New Zealand’s national game.

Foxton, Levin & Feilding

Largely rural, the Manawatu region is dotted with many small farming communities.  Foxton and Levin are pleasant rural centres on the main tourist route, whilst Feilding is 14 times winner of “New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town”.
