About Wellington

Not only the political capital, Wellington is also the art and culture capital of New Zealand. No trip to Wellington is complete without visiting the city's art and culture attractions.

Wellington – New Zealand’s Capital City

Explore the outstanding Te Papa Museum of New Zealand - an interactive museum of international acclaim. Other cultural attractions include The NZ Film Archive, Alexander Turnbull National Library and the birth place of writer Katherine Mansfield.

Capital Culture

Wellington bursts with galleries, art shops and fashion boutiques. The central city locations of Cuba Mall, Manners Street and Courtenay Place are particularly popular, sporting funky stores, exciting nightlife and a vibrant café scene.

Architecturally flamboyant, the Beehive (parliament building) is a New Zealand icon and well worth a visit.

“Wellywood”  on the World Stage

“Wellywood” is also home to Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson and the award winning Weta Studios - located north of the city in the Hutt Valley. Another famous Wellingtonian is the highly esteemed twentieth century short story writer Katherine Mansfield. Mansfield fans will enjoy visiting her birthplace, now a popular tourist attraction.

Shopping & Attractions

For the best in downtown shopping and entertainment visit Wellington's four quarters - Courtenay, Cuba, Willis and Lambton.  Lambton boasts the best in upmarket shopping, Willis is home to top local and national designers, funky Cuba offers the best in alternative urban shopping, whilst Courtenay is heart of the restaurant and bar scene.

For a great view of the city take the cable car to Kelburn, or view the entire harbour from the top of Mount Victoria.  Wellington’s multitude of hills provide excellent mountain biking, whilst the wind-swept waterways offer premium windsurfing conditions.

Kapiti Coast & Paekakariki

A little further afield on the Kapiti Coast you can escape the city completely and enjoy sun, sand and surf. Visit the quiet seaside village of Paekakariki, or venture offshore to the Kapiti Island bird sanctuary.
