Waikato Wine Region

The plentiful Waikato is an up and coming New Zealand wine region. Encompassing the large Waikato region, as well as the Bay of Plenty, the Waikato wine region is an expansive one – though still relatively small in terms of production.

The Waikato is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most arable horticultural areas, and this certainly favours the region’s wine production. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most popular regional varieties.

Warm growing conditions and clay sub-soils ensure the Waikato wine region’s steady commercial growth. The increased importance of Hamilton as a North Island commercial centre, and the Bay of Plenty’s tourist allure also add to the region’s wine production.
