World Left-handed Golf Tournament Tees Off At Millbrook
4/03/08
Left-handed golfers from around the world converged on Queenstown’s five-star Millbrook resort yesterday (Monday March 3) to compete in the first round of the WALG (World Association of Left-handed Golfers) 18th World Left-handed Golf Tournament.
A total of 297 golfers took to the tees early this morning at Millbrook, Arrowtown, Queenstown and Jacks Point courses to start the week-long event.
Seventy-two golfers were on course at Millbrook including (pictured) Dave Pecknold from Canada (teeing off) watched by Sam Hume from Western Australia and Keith Towers from New Zealand.
The 297 golfers include players from Ireland, England, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, USA and Australia – as well as New Zealand.
Organiser Richard Davison from Tapanui said it was the first time the tournament had been held in Queenstown, and was only its third time in New Zealand.
“
I’ve talked to a few of the competitors who played Millbrook today and they loved it,” he said. “
They were certainly impressed with the course and the surrounding scenery.
“
We’re looking forward to a great week.”
Millbrook’s course has strong ‘left-hander’ associations – the championship 18-hole course was designed by Sir Bob Charles, the only left-handed golfer to have won the British Open back in 1963.
