About The West Coast

Sparsely populated and seemingly a million miles away from civilisation, the West Coast offers some of New Zealand’s most ruggedly beautiful scenery – from dense primeval forests and scarred mining settlements, to glaciers and pounding surf beaches.

The Wild, Wonderful West Coast

Once one of the great unexplored regions of New Zealand, the West Coast is now a popular tourist destination with a fascinating history.

Heaphy Track, Karamea & Westport

The West Coast is split into a number of distinct districts. The Buller District  stretches from stunning coastline through to the inner alpine ranges of the island. At the northern end, nestled between impenetrable forest and the Tasman Sea, is Karamea, entry point to the popular Heaphy Track. Inland, Springs Junction or Reefton are popular pit-stops for coast-to-coast travellers, whilst Westport is a great base from which to explore the Tauranga Bay and Cape Foulwind seal colonies.

Punakaiki and Paparoa National Park

A true feature of the region, take time to visit Punakaiki and its famous Pancake Rocks and blowholes. Located in the Paparoa National Park, these interesting rock formations attract thousands.  The surrounding area is also rich in recreational activities, including hiking, canoeing and horse riding.

Greymouth and Lake Brunner

The Grey District is the departure point for one of the world’s great train journeys – the outstanding TranzAlpine Express. The main centre of Greymouth is also home to a range of activities, including greenstone carving, art galleries, the Monteith's brewery and Shantytown - a simulated historic gold-town.

Inland from Greymouth is Lake Brunner - a firm family favourite, with many holiday homes and ample child-safe swimming beaches.  Also a great place for Brown Trout fishing, this is one of the South Island's best lakeside getaways.

Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier

At the southern end of the West Coast, Westland is one of New Zealand's most picturesque districts.

Westland is one of the few places in the world where glaciers penetrate coastal rainforest, making them easily accessible and thoroughly breathtaking. No trip to this district would be complete without visiting the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers – jewels in the West Coast’s crown.  Experience these mighty glaciers on a guided climb, or take to the air for a flightseeing tour.
