About Southland & Stewart Island

New Zealand’s southernmost province, Southland spans the breadth of the South Island. Much of its uniqueness and intrigue lies in the ever-changing backdrops – vistas so different from one another it’s difficult to imagine you’re in the same country, let alone the same province.

Relax in the Diverse Deep South

Within a day’s travel, you could experience everything from towering rainforests to alpine tussocks, rolling fertile farmlands and golden beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s like a dozen destinations rolled into one.

Catlins Coast, Balclutha & Gore

Sparsely populated, the Southland region is a haven for wildlife. The rocky headlands of the Catlins coast are a sanctuary for marine life – seals, albatross and penguins all making their homes there. A popular surf destination, the Catlins also offers stunning bush and forest walks.

Inland, the Southland townships of Balclutha and Gore service the many farming districts. Gore is also a world-renowned brown trout fishing spot, swarming with anglers throughout the year.

Invercargill and Bluff

Fishermen will also enjoy the sea bounty Southland provides. Bluff, at the very southern end of the island, is famous for its regional delicacy – the Bluff oyster.

Invercargill is the hub of Southland. Small in size, Invercargill is big in personality, home to the unique tuatarium, expansive gardens and parks and unforgettable art and architecture.

Southern Scenic Route, Riverton & Tuatapere

From Invercargill or Bluff the opportunities for exploration take two distinct paths. To the west many journey on to Fiordland along the stunning Southern Scenic Route - stopping at the arty fishing town of Riverton, or the acclaimed Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track. Alternatively, the southern path leads to the remote beauty of Stewart Island, accessible by sea or air.

Stewart Island & Rakiura National Park

Stewart Island is New Zealand’s third island and teems with native birds, forest walks and wildlife. Rakiura National Park, including the Rakiura Great Walk, draw many to the island. With sandy beaches, lush vegetation, exquisite bushwalks and numerous eco-tours Stewart Island is an extremely popular destination. As close to the South Pole as you're ever likely to go, this engaging island is sure to give you a warm welcome.
