New Zealand Short & Day Walks

Walking is New Zealand’s most popular outdoor activity – and no wonder, with so many amazing short walks found all over the country! Whether you’re in the middle of the city or on a secluded coastal highway, you’re never far from a fantastic walking track or hiking trail.

Often the best way to find great short walks in New Zealand is to visit the local information centre. Larger cities and tourist destinations have dedicated Visitor Information Centres, and in smaller towns council offices will be able to provide you with a wealth of walking information.

Short walks in New Zealand take in all kinds of scenery – from inner city heritage trails, to coastal vistas, native forests, lakes and rivers. The main thing to remember is to wear comfortable shoes, and take plenty of water and energy food.

If the walk will take a few hours be sure to let others know of your whereabouts, and always be prepared for a change in weather or conditions!
