Rakiura National Park

Rakiura National Park is the newest of New Zealand’s National Parks. Officially opened in 2002, Rakiura National Park encompasses 85% of Stewart Island and is home to one of New Zealand’s Great Walks – the Rakiura Track.Rakiura is the Maori name for Stewart Island, meaning 'The Land of Glowing Skies'.

Location

Located on Stewart Island, the northern end of Rakiura National Park looks towards the South Island, over blustery Foveaux Strait. To the east, west and south, the park is surrounded by the Southern Ocean – fresh from the icy waters of Antarctica.
 

Getting to Stewart Island

Stewart Island can be reached via a 20-minute plane ride from Invercargill, or a one-hour ferry crossing from Bluff.

Accommodation in Rakiura National Park

A range of visitor accommodation - from backpackers to exclusive lodges - is available in Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island.
Back-country huts are available on Rakiura National Parks walking tracks. Because the Rakiura Track is a Great Walk, permits are required for anyone staying in one of the huts, or camping en route. Permits are available from the Stewart Island Visitor Centre.

Hiking & Walking Tracks in Rakiura National Park

Rakiura National Park provides a bewildering 245km of walking tracks (compared to only 27km of sealed road on the island!). 
The three-day Rakiura Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. The 36-km hike incorporates native forest, coastal beauty and historic insight into the island.
Stewart Island's walking tracks range in length and difficulty from 10-minute forest strolls and basic day-walks, to advanced wilderness tracks requiring excellent fitness and stamina.
 

Rakiura Climate

Hikers need to be prepared for rapidly changeable conditions. Weather on Stewart Island can turn cold and blustery in an instant.
 

Wildlife in Rakiura National Park

In Rakiura National Park you will be treated to a who’s-who of New Zealand birdlife – from kiwi, weka and kaka, to tui, bellbirds, native pigeon (kereru) and the rare saddleback.

A highlight is the Stewart Island kiwi (Southern Tokoeka) – different to mainland kiwi species because of their unique day time feeding habits.
