Arts Content B&B - Otago Peninsula Dunedin
More Information
Come and stay with us at the “Arts Content” B&B, in Company Bay, right on the waterfront of the beautiful Otago Peninsula – Dunedin. You have the choice of Self Contained or B&B.
Share our pleasure in our beautiful, “secret” garden which, in season, rewards the viewer with daffodils, snowdrops, sweet scented jonquils, azaleas, rhododendrons, peonies, camellias and many, many more. Take the time to stop and smell our fragrant roses – there are more than eighty – including many David Austin roses.
Set in the garden is the “Arts Content” Gallery which displays the luminous pastel paintings of Cathryn Shemansky (see www.cathyshemansky.com) where you are welcome to browse at your leisure and, perhaps take home with you an original painting or a print, of Peninsula scenery and wildlife, as a lasting memory of your holiday.
Company Bay is thirteen kilometres along the scenic drive of the Otago Peninsula. With its superb, natural scenery, stunning vistas from the coast road and high on the Peninsula, harbourside settlements nestled in a myriad of picturesque bays, unique wildlife, historic buildings and walking tracks, the Otago Peninsula has, for decades, played an important role in the tourism and ecology New Zealand.
In Company Bay, the hillsides, pastoral land, woods and marine foreshore, combine to create breathtaking views which refresh the soul and renew the spirit. The breeze carries the smell of the sea and the cries of seagulls are mixed with the calls of songbirds.
The “Arts Content” B&B and Gallery are on the waterfront at Company Bay between Macandrew Bay and Broad Bay. We are on the corner of Portobello Road and Castlewood Road – the road leading to Larnach Castle, Dunedin’s premiere tourist attraction. In addition, we are almost halfway to the world renowned Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony, the planet’s only mainland nesting colony of the Royal Albatross.
Close to Taiaroa Head and its distinctive, much admired red and white lighthouse are opportunities to see, close-up, Sea-lions and the exceedingly rare Yellow-eyed Penguins.
In Company Bay itself, easily seen from the deck, from the doorstep as it were, of the “Arts Content” B&B, regal Black Swans, Spoonbills, Herons and many other species of marine and inter-tidal birds are amongst the frequent visitors. An enormous, old, bull Sea-lion (we call him “Big Mac”) often hauls himself up onto the sandy beach of nearby Macandrew Bay and pods of dolphin have been seen cruising in the harbour chasing baitfish and salmon.
The Otago Peninsula and the Otago Harbour are famed for their natural beauty, unique wildlife and relaxed lifestyle. It’s proximity to the City of Dunedin allows the visitor to make the most of the natural wonders on offer whilst, at the same time, being within easy reach of all the attractions of a busy, cosmopolitan metropolis.
The wind fills the sails of sailing dinghies and visiting yachts, windsurfers skip and hop across the harbour and the white wakes of ships create a broken mosaic of the reflections of the hills and settlements that bound the harbour on either side. In late Spring and in Summer and Autumn, spectacular sunsets bathe the harbour in a spellbinding halo of gold and orange.
The mountain and hills, that cradle the harbour, above Company Bay, seem to almost touch the stars at night. Here is a place where the wind tells stories, and where stands of Macrocarpa and hillside meadows knit a veil around the peaceful, little communities.
As night falls over the Peninsula, the shimmering, golden lights of the city create a tiara of light which are reflected in the water of the harbour.
The Otago Peninsula is a jewel of nature, a kaleidoscope of wildlife, vegetation and sea. Everything about the Peninsula creates a special feeling. That’s why we live here.
A stay at the “Arts Content” B&B on the Otago Peninsula, guarantees a holiday to remember. Do come and stay with us, you will be most welcome.
