Northland Wine Region

Birthplace of modern New Zealand – Northland was also New Zealand’s first wine region, with the area's first vines planted in the early 1800s.

Although considered the smallest wine production region in New Zealand, Northland is known for its excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, which flourish in the warm ripening conditions of the far North Island.

Wine production in the Northland region of New Zealand can be attributed to large numbers of Dalmatian (Croatian) immigrants who travelled to the Kauri gum fields of Northland in the mid 19th century. These immigrants brought with them a passion for wine making – in particular Dalmatia’s reverence for red wine production. The famous Babich family (now one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed wine makers) are of Dalmatian descent.

Today, wineries can be found throughout the Northland region.
