About Bay of Islands & Northland

The Northland region - particularly the settlements of Waitangi and Russell - is of historic importance to New Zealand.

Cradle of the Nation

Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn of New Zealand's founding Treaty of Waitangi agreement. Explore Russell's museum and historic buildings, and visit the country's oldest buildings in picturesque Kerikeri.

Islands Aplenty

The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's top visitor destinations due to its spectacular scenery, mild climate and seemingly endless maritime activities. With hundreds of islands, beaches and coves just waiting to be explored, the Bay of Islands offers fishing, diving, boating, dolphin swimming and kayaking year round.

Kauri Calling

Northland's west coast is defined by its ancient kauri trees. Once covering Northland completely, but felled to near obscurity by early settlers and Dalmatian gum-diggers, New Zealand's kauri forests are a treasure to explore. Get up close to Tane Mahuta - the world's largest kauri tree thought to be around 1500 years old!

Kaitaia & Ninety Mile Beach

Don’t leave the region without taking a trip down Ninety Mile Beach. This vast stretch of golden coastline is accessible by 4WD or coach from Kaitaia, and leads to the famous Cape Reinga lighthouse.  Steeped in Maori mythology, Cape Reinga is also the point where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea converge, to breathtaking effect.
