Nelson Lakes National Park

Home to the glacier-carved Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa, the Nelson Lakes National Park offers stunning alpine scenery, as well as fantastic hiking, walking, fishing and boating. Nelson Lakes National Park covers 102,000 hectares of the Southern Alps and is also home to a wide range of beautiful New Zealand birds.

Location

Located in the north of the South Island, the Nelson Lakes National Park is around 1.5 hours drive from either Nelson or Blenheim.
 

Getting to Nelson Lakes National Park

The park can be accessed via State Highway 63 from Blenheim. You can also enter the park from the stunning Lewis Pass.
The main township of St Arnaud is a small but pretty alpine retreat, serviced by a number of transport providers.

Activities in Nelson Lakes National Park

Hiking and walking is popular in Nelson Lakes National Park:

  • Short walks explore the park's glacier, alpine and lake features.
  • Longer hikes require average fitness
  • The Travers/Sabine Circuit is the park's most popular track. 
  • In winter only experienced hikers should take to the tracks.

Mountain climbing is also available for experienced climbers only.
Mount Robert also offers skiing – though the field is accessed via a 1.5 hour walking track, so good fitness is essential.
