What to do in National Park Village

  • Pack some tramping boots and head out into the Tongariro National Park. There are a variety of hiking tracks to choose, from the one day Tongariro Crossing to the four day Tongariro Northern Circuit, considered to be one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.
  • Less than 20 minutes’ drive away from the village is Whakapapa, New Zealand’s biggest ski-field. Situated on the slopes of the active volcano Mt. Ruapehu, both Whakapapa and Turoa offer world class skiing and snowboarding.
  • To the east of National Park Village is the Whanganui National Park where the Whanganui River cuts through native bush and offers superb kayaking and jet boating opportunities.
  • A scenic flight with Mountain Air will offer unparalleled views of the three volcanoes, and take you over the tops of sites such as the Emerald Lakes, Blue Lakes and the Tama Lakes.
  • The region offers one of the best insights into New Zealand’s railway history, and numerous lines have been restored showcasing some of the country’s most significant engineering achievements.

How do you get to National Park Village?

  • Travel by Plane
    • There are no air services to National Park Village. Nearby Taupo Airport serves the region with daily Air New Zealand flights to/from New Zealand's major hubs. The airport is located about one hours’ drive away National Park Village.
  • Travel by Train
    • National Park Village can be reached on The Overlander train, which runs frequently between Auckland and Wellington and back.
  • Travel by Bus
    • National Park Village can be serviced by most major inter-city bus networks and backpacker bus services. Several scenic tour buses and passenger shuttles also provide transportation to the village.
  • Rent a Vehicle
    • There are limited rental car options in the Ruapehu region. Nearby Taupo offers multiple options for rental cars and motorhomes.
