About Kaikoura

Marine activities are the backbone of this seaside town, with everything from dolphin and whale watching, to swimming with seals, kayaking, snorkelling and surfing available for visitors.

Kaikoura

A rare and complex marine system creates a rich habitat for marine life, including whales, seals, dolphins and pelagic seabirds. The town's history lies in whaling (not the watching variety!) and relics of this past can be found around the township.

Maritime Menu

As well as the maritime activities on offer, Kaikoura is famous for its local delicacy: crayfish. The name 'Kaikoura' actually translates from Maori as 'meal of crayfish', so it's no surprise to find crayfish available at almost every restaurant or fish and chip shop in town. Just be prepared to stretch your budget! Other delectable seafood can be found on most menus too.

Scenic Beauty

Part of the Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route, Kaikoura is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and snow-capped mountain ranges, creating an unusual scenic beauty found in few other places. The rugged hill country surrounding the township offer attractions of its own, including excellent walking tracks, vineyards, llama rides and horse treks.

Maori History

Before the European settlers' whaling industry took hold of Kaikoura, Maori had been living in the area for over 900 years. Several Maori pa (settlement) sites can be seen on the peninsula, and the area features in several Maori legends. Many visitors enjoy a Maori cultlural tour, learning about the local Maori history.
