Inland Scenic Route 72

The Inland Scenic Route takes you through some of heartland New Zealand’s friendliest rural towns. A great alternative to the main tourist route, the Inland Scenic Route offers a glimpse into the heart of rural Canterbury – without the tourist hordes encountered on the main visitor trails.

North Canterbury

From the quiet town of Amberley, head inland to Rangiora: the hub of North Canterbury's farming community with a busy main street, cafes, restaurants and accommodation. Further on you'll discover charming Oxford from where jet boating, fishing, horse riding and skiing are all within easy reach.

Mt Hutt & Methven

Hit the slopes at one of New Zealand's top ski areas - Mt Hutt - or relax in the apres ski atmosphere of Methven village. A year round destination, the Methven & Mt Hutt area also offers great walking, fishing and jet boating. Further south you can enjoy more walks or just a relaxing picnic at pretty Peel Forest.

Your journey along the route ends in beautiful Geraldine – a rural town of particular beauty and character.  With pretty tree-lined streets and restored colonial buildings, Geraldine oozes charm. Be sure to enjoy some of the lovely locally made food items on offer.

The end of the Inland Scenic Route marks a crossroads for your travels: either take State Highway 79 to Fairlie and the stunning Mt Cook Mackenzie region, or head east towards the coast and Timaru.
