BALLOONING IN CANTERBURY

About Heather Hapeta

Heather Campbell Hapeta is a traveller who loves to write. Her authentic articles often leave the reader thinking "I want to go there", or conversely "I couldn¹t do that".

Heather is a passionate nomad and is often on long, extensive travels: she has just completed a book of her experiences. (Naked in Budapest: travels with a passionate nomad) She began extensive travelling at fifty. Her birthday gift to herself - a backpack, a youth hostel card, an 'around-the-world' air ticket, and enough money for a year of budget travel.

As travel editor for the Christchurch Citizen, she also wrote a well-received opinion column based on travel in the widest sense of the word.

This weekly piece considered as humorous, informative, practical and topical: topics ranged from toilets and haircuts, packing, anthrax, photography, how to write travel articles, safety, and about the occasional traveller whom she hates to sit beside. This style of writing continues in her blogs: http://kiwitravelwriter.wordpress.com and http://heatherhapeta.blogspot.com/.

As well as the South China Morning Post, Sydney Morning Herald and magazines in Korea and Britain, she has written for many New Zealand publications. Articles, along with great photographs, have appeared in publications such as: New Zealand Women's Weekly; Backpacker News; Christchurch Press; New Zealand Wilderness; Healthy Options, the New Zealand Gardener, Wild Tomato and for the Christchurch Convention Centre's magazine.

Stories of hers have been selected for two New Zealand anthologies: Home: new short short stories by New Zealand writers, Random House ISBN 1 86941 741 0 (pub. October 2005) and Land Very Fertile: Banks Peninsula in poetry and prose. Canterbury University Press ISBN 978-1-877257-75-9.

Heather tutors in travel writing, has written study notes for book discussion groups, and is a popular motivational speaker on travel and how to change your life.
