About Hawke's Bay

With an abundance of sunshine, Mediterranean climate, grapevine covered hillsides and a thriving gourmet food and wine industry, the Hawke’s Bay is the Tuscany of the South Pacific.

Wine & Food Capital of New Zealand

Lying on the sun-drenched east coast this tasty Hawke's Bay region is a gourmand’s paradise and one of New Zealand’s top wine and food destinations.

The oldest wine region in New Zealand, Hawke's Bay has an international reputation for producing top quality red varieties. Also the food capital of New Zealand, don't leave this region without partaking in a wine and food trail - including orchard, farm, honey, cheese, olive, winery and chocolate tours.

For a real taste of the region, visit the traditional farmers market - held in Hastings every Sunday, and Napier on a Saturday.  Here you will discover the freshest local produce and organic foods - bon appetit!

Art Deco Napier

The Hawke's Bay is also one of New Zealand's most photogenic regions.  Totally destroyed in 1931 after a colossal earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, the regional capital of Napier was rebuilt from scratch. Today the town reflects the intricate Art Deco designs popular at the time.

Lovingly restored, Napier’s town centre is now a living heritage trail and one of the world’s great Art Deco monuments.

To truly experience the magic of Napier take a guided Art Deco walking tour, or simply enjoy the ambience of the inner city at your own pace. With a laid-back seaside feel, there’s ample time to stroll down celebrated Marine Parade or dine alfresco at an inner city restaurant.

Hastings

Hastings, 20kms down the road, is Napier’s sister city.  Renowned for its 1930s-style Spanish Mission architecture, Hastings is the hub of the wine region. A great place from which to plan a wine trail, or taste the fruits of the region's labour, over 30 top vineyards are close at hand.

Nature & Cultural Attractions

Not just celebrated for its glorious food and wine, Hawke’s Bay also bursts with activities and attractions.

Walkers and hikers will enjoy the many walks on offer in the Kaweka and Ruahine Conservation Parks, whilst adrenaline junkies can experience the thrill of tandem paragliding at stunning Te Mata Peak.

Steeped in Maori tradition, the Hawke's  Bay is also a great place to experience a traditional Marae - with tour visits available.  For a truly Maori experience, take the opportunity to paddle a genuine 4 tonne, 18 metre waka (canoe) up the Clive River.

Nature-lovers should visit the impressive Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers, whilst children and adults alike will marvel at the world’s longest place name:
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki -maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu!
