How do you get to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers?

  • Travel by Plane
    • There are no commercial air services to the glaciers, however nearby Hokitika, around 90 minutes’ drive away, offers flights to Christchurch. Charter and scenic flights are available which leave from both Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier.
  • Travel by Train
    • There are no train services to Franz Josef or Fox Glaciers.
  • Travel by Bus
    • Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are well serviced by many of New Zealand's bus networks. Buses operating between Greymouth and Wanaka can pick up and drop off passengers at Franz Josef or Fox Glacier.
  • Rent a Vehicle
    • Several major car rental companies have outlets in Greymouth (2 hours away), Hokitika (90 minutes away) or Westport (3.5 hours away). To avoid disappointment, these should be booked prior to your arrival if possible.
