Fiordland National Park
Location
Fiordland National Park is located in the southwest corner of the South Island.
Getting To Fiordland National Park
The town of Te Anau is the gateway to the park, and also a great place to arrange transport and tour options.
Te Anau is 170kms from Queenstown and 160kms from Invercargill.
Accommodation in Fiordland National Park
A range of accommodation is available in Te Anau or Manapouri. Many people also choose to stay in Queenstown, visiting the Fiordland area on day-trips or organised tours.
Inside the national park itself, huts are available on all the main walking tracks. Bookings are essential in summer!
Walking & Hiking Tracks in Fiordland National Park
Three of New Zealand’s Great Walks are located in Fiordland National Park:
- The Kepler Track
- The Routeburn Track
- The Milford Track
Other popular walks include the Hollyford and Hump Ridge tracks.
Fiordland Climate
Fiordland is known for its high rainfall – so wet weather gear is essential! Because of its geographical location (in the southwest corner of New Zealand), temperatures can drop in a short amount of time. It is not uncommon for the park to become cut off during the winter, when heavy snowfall and avalanches block the main routes.
Wildlife in Fiordland National Park
Fiordland’s extraordinary isolation means that it is home to over 700 plants found nowhere else on Earth.
Also home to an array of rare indigenous birds, Fiordland is most notably associated with the takahe – a plump flightless bird. The takahe is so rare that it was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1948.
Many other forest birds make their home here – filling the extensive forests with their distinctive calls.
