About Eastland

Eastland is a region of diverse landscapes. In the space of a day you can journey through primeval native forests, view stunning lakes and rivers, and end up on a deserted beach. Far from the holiday crowds, solitude defines the striking Eastland region.

Gisborne - First to See the Light

Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the new day. Don't leave Eastland without witnessing an east coast sunrise - truly magical. The region's capital and main port of call for most visitors, Gisborne enjoys high sunshine hours and a warm climate.  Famous as the first landing point of Captain Cook’s Endeavour in 1769, Gisborne is also the hometown of world-renowned Opera diva, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Whangara, Ruatoria & Hicks Bay

Steeped in Maori tradition, this region is dotted with important historical sites and beautifully carved meeting houses.  The tiny settlement of Whangara has become a noted visitor attraction in recent years, as principal location for the movie Whale Rider and home town of writer Witi Ihimaera.

A composite of small coastal townships, Eastland is blessed with countless beaches offering excellent swimming and surfing. For a taste of undisturbed coastal life be sure to visit Hicks Bay, Ruatoria and Tolaga Bay – off the main tourist routes and unashamedly restful.

Te Urewera National Park & Lake Waikaremoana

Further inland you will discover the splendour of Te Urewera National Park. This is the North Island’ s largest untouched native forest and spiritual home of the Tuhoe people – known as the “children of the mist”.  With numerous bush walks centering on the stunning Lake Waikaremoana, this is a haven for hiking, bird watching and camping.
