Air New Zealand is well-known for offering fun, light-hearted and entertaining safety videos to passengers, and the latest – aptly titled The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made – is no exception.

Cleverly riding on the coattails of Hobbit mania, and referencing the not uncommon misconception that Hobbiton is indeed a real New Zealand destination, Air New Zealand’s The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made features a star-studded cast, including Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Sir Peter Jackson, and stars Elijah Wood (Frodo), Dean O'Gorman (Fili), and Sylvester McCoy (Radagast the Brown).

Directed by Taika Waititi (Boy, Eagle vs Shark and What We Do in the Shadows), who makes an appearance as a young and safety-conscious eagle-riding Gandalf the wizard, the video was shot over six days at New Zealand Middle-earth locations, including Hobbiton and Central Otago.

It’s not the first time Air New Zealand has taken inspiration from The Hobbit to capture the attention of travellers. Their 2012 video, An Unexpected Briefing, attracted more than 12 million global online views.
