About Central South Island

The Central South Island area covers the towns of Timaru and Temuka, Pleasant Point and Geraldine. The region sprawls between the east coast of the South Island, the Southern Alps to the west and the Waitaki region to the south.

Explore the Fascinating Central South Island

From Maori rock art to jam and cheese; wallabies to pottery; strawberries to steam trains, the Central South Island is a lively hotchpotch of home-grown New Zealand at its best.

Timaru - Place of Shelter

Timaru, (originally ‘Te Maru’, meaning ‘place of shelter’) is the Central South Island’s main service centre. With a population of around 27,000, the seaside city of Timaru remains a relaxing destination. Home to an attractive swimming beach, top art gallery, beautiful botanic gardens and some great annual events, Timaru is an ideal family destination.

Enjoy Pretty Geraldine

Picturesque and welcoming, the town of Geraldine is home to a friendly mix of farmers, artisans and connoisseurs of fine food. With some memorable food outlets and a selection of outdoor activities to choose from, Geraldine makes for a relaxing stop-off point.

Pleasant Point - The Name Says it All!

The aptly-named town of Pleasant Point is a key stop for rail enthusiasts. The Pleasant Point Museum & Railway boasts the world's only Ford Model T railcar, and offers rides in a fully restored steam train. Near to Pleasant Point are several historic Maori Rock Art sites, as well as Hanging Rock - one of the few places where New Zealand's long-tailed bat resides.

Hop in to Waimate

Close to Geraldine is Waimate, known for its wallabies and strawberries; an odd combination, but both big attractions in their own right. Whilst wallabies can be viewed in captivity in town, the animals are considered a pest by locals and year-round wallaby hunting is popular. In fact, wallaby pies are a specialty of the local tearoom! Strawberries also draw hundreds of visitors to Waimate each December for the Waimate Strawberry Fare – a summer celebration of the strawberry.
