About Bay of Plenty

Visitors are drawn to the sparkling golden beaches of the Bay of Plenty region.

Sun, Sand & Surf

Whether surfing and sunbathing at Mt Maunganui, swimming at Papamoa, coastal walks at Whakatane or snorkelling, boating and fishing at Tauranga, the Bay of Plenty's beaches are a spectacular and entertaining regional drawcard.

Fruitful Heritage

Home to the Kiwifruit Capital of the World (Te Puke) the Bay of Plenty has a rich history of horticultural production. Gaining its name from Captain Cook, who observed the area's plentiful food supplies, the Bay of Plenty has since gleaned a reputation as one of the country's top fruit producers and exporters. Visit a local farmers' market or try an orchard tour to get a real taste for this fruitful region.

Explosive Surroundings

Settled upon the Taupo Volcanic Zone, the Bay of Plenty is home to an explosive volcanic history. Although most of the area's volcanoes (such as 'the mount') are now dormant, White Island - known in Maori as Whakaari - is one of the world's few remaining live marine volcanoes. Located 50kms off the coast of Whakatane, White Island is accessible by boat or helicopter and can be explored on foot. One of the region's top visitor attractions, White Island should not be missed!

Small Town Attractions

Although home to New Zealand's fifth largest city - Tauranga - the Bay of Plenty is made up largely of small coastal towns that offer their own special attractions. Visit Papamoa for a truly relaxing beach-side destination. Spend time in Katikati exploring the town's artistic flair. Or visit tiny Maketu to learn of the area's important cultural history.
