About Akaroa and Banks Peninsula

Banks Peninsula is the intricate thumbprint that juts out from the South Island’s east coast. Best known for Akaroa - the quaint French-inspired village popular for dolphin watching - Banks Peninsula is home to so much more!

Discover Akaroa & Banks Peninsula

An explosive volcanic history has turned Banks Peninsula into the complex and endlessly surprising labyrinth of bays, hills and harbours that it is today. Renowned for its charm, history and wildlife, Banks Peninsula is a superb place to spend a day, a week or an entire holiday.

Appealing Bays

Each tiny bay and settlement has its own appeal. Whilst all are isolated and quiet, the activities on offer are endless: Akaroa has its dolphins, shopping and fine eateries, Pohatu Bay offers penguin-watching tours and kayaking, whilst Barry’s Bay is famous for its delicious cheeses. At Takamatua stop off for some superb, fresh lavender products. Experience the Maori history of the peninsula at the Okain’s Bay museum. Hinewai Reserve offers gorgeous nature trails in regenerated bush, whilst Little Akaloa is home to a picturesque stone church.

Charming Towns

The townships of Banks Peninsula are small and welcoming. Lyttelton and the other settlements surrounding Lyttelton Harbour are popular weekend destinations with city dwellers who enjoy the boutique shopping, fine eateries and relaxed atmosphere of the tiny port towns. Made up largely of baches (holiday homes) the tiny isolated townships of Akaroa Harbour offer limited amenities but plentiful charm, and are abuzz with holiday makers come summer.

Marine Paradise

Naturally the jutting peninsula offers endless entertainment for water lovers. Home to secluded surf spots and isolated swimming beaches, Banks Peninsula is an ideal summer getaway. Other visitors enjoy kayaking, boat cruises or jet skiing in the safe harbour waters. You can also catch the Lyttelton-Diamond Harbour ferry across Lyttelton Harbour to historic Quail Island for a day of relaxation and gentle walks.
