Getting to Taupo

Arriving by Air

Taupo Airport services the Central Volcanic Plateau region, with daily Air New Zealand flights from New Zealand's major hubs. Located just 8km south of Taupo town centre, the airport also supports charter flights, scenic flights and skydiving flights.

Airport Transport

Taupo Airport Shuttle meets every scheduled flight at the airport, and operates a door-to-door service for up to eight occupants at a time. A number of taxi companies also operate within Taupo.

Car Rentals & Motorhome Hire

Four international rental car companies operate from Taupo Airport - Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Avis. Bookings are essential in order to secure a car on arrival. Additional rental car companies operate from within Taupo town centre.

Buses/Shuttles/Tour Buses

Taupo is serviced by most major inter-city bus networks and backpacker bus services. Several scenic tour buses and passenger shuttles also provide transportation around the Taupo region.

Trains

The town of Ohakune can be reached on The Overlander train, which runs frequently between Auckland and Wellington and back.

Public Transport

Taupo's surrounding suburbs are serviced by a public bus network called Taupo Connector. Fares and route maps can be found at the Environment Waikato website.

Parking in Taupo town centre is free of charge! The town centre offers ample parking spaces for cars, motorcycles and campervans, all of which are limited by time. Different parking spaces offer different allowed time periods, as outlined in the Taupo District Council's parking guide.
